Ins and Outs for November

I can't believe November's already over and tomorrow will be December!  So what better time to talk about the Ins and Outs of November for me.

X Factor!  Am loving it this year and don't know what we're all going to do on a Saturday night when it's over.  I hope Matt wins but would be happy if Rebecca won too.  Not mad on One Direction, I keep thinking the kid with the curly hair looks like Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall so I keep thinking of River Cottage when I see him hehe

Snow!  Having lived in Canada for a few years, I was used to snow, but I must say, there's nothing like snow on home ground :)  Seeing all the places you know blanketed in the white stuff is lovely.  But I think Bailey loved the snow even more than me :)  Bouncing around like a lunatic and then coming in with snowballs in his beard hehe

Christmassy nails!  Am in love with my new Christmas China Glaze nail varnishes but can't really wear them because my nails are in bits.  So have started doing Operation Fix My Nails which consists of just applying a nail strengthener and no other nail varnishes, just to see how I get on.

My new haircut!  I got my hair cut earlier in the month after being told by my friend Ruth (Hi Ruth, we must do hot chocolate soon!) about a place called Cheng salon beside The Olympia on Dame Street.  I wasn't sure right after the haircut but now I'm delira with it and have a baby pony tail when I tie it up :)

Reading!  I just finished Rachel's Holiday by Marian Keyes, lent to me by Andrea from work :)  I loved it and have just found out this minute after googling it to check my spelling that they're making a movie about it and Catherine Zeta Jones is going to play Rachel.  I'm not sure how I feel about that hehe I just hope they keep the characters Irish as in the book, that's all, oh, and with good Irish accents :)

Slush!  Holy Moses I hate slush.  My poor Uggs are destroyed from all the puddles of slush that have appeared from the snow melting.  And it's bloody slippy, my legs are sore this evening from clenching them trying not to fall going to work and back :)

Bad skin!  My poor face has erupted the past couple of days with little spots on the tops of my cheeks.  I usually have clear enough skin and I haven't changed my skincare routine so I'm guessing it's the freezing weather and central heating at work and at home that are the culprits.  I'm going to have a look in the shops this weekend, weather permitting, and if I see anything that I feel might be good, maybe get it for my birthday next month or Christmas.  I think I've spent a good bit on products this month, so am gonna scale back till after Christmas I think.

That's all I can think of this month.  It's been a good month and let's hope next month continues like that :)

Comparing MUA Shade 20 vs MAC Carbon

Take a look at this ladies.

One of these is MAC's eyeshadow in Carbon and one is MUA Shade 20.  If you read my blog you'll know I'm very much into finding dupes for more expensive eyeshadows.  So it won't surprise you to find out that the eyeshadow on the left is the MUA shadow and on the right is Carbon :)

I swiped each shadow twice in the above photo and look at the difference!  The pigmentation of Shade 20 is amazing.  It's a soft creamy eyeshadow that is a fantastic bargain at £1 or €1.05.  I was doing one of my One Look Two Prices looks this evening using these eyeshadows and couldn't believe the difference in the two.  So much so that I felt Shade 20 needed a post of it's own :)

I will post the makeup look tomorrow to show the differences when applied on the eyes but please go out and try this eyeshadow.  I have no affiliation whatsoever with Superdrug or MUA, I just love this product and think everyone needs to try it :)

Having the chats

Since it's a cold, wintery evening, I'm not very motivated to play around with makeup so I thought a bit of a ramble is in order :)
The past few weeks have been brilliant.  I've loved really getting into blogging and writing about what makes me happy :)  There were 2 highlights in the blogging department.  Firstly, being mentioned as one of the links the girls on Beaut.ie have been enjoying, and second of all, being named blog of the week on the L'Onglex website!  I was delighted with both of these cos I love those 2 sites and check them out every day :)

I had a long needed haircut, which I was really nervous about and right afterwards I wasn't 100% on it, I thought the layers were too short, but I'm learning how to play around with it and actually use products in it!  I had mad long hair for ages and would just throw it back into a ponytail and do nothing with it.  Now it has shape and texture and I can play around with it and it dries in under 2 minutes which is a bonus hehe I must take a few pics of it and show y'all.  I got it cut in a place on Dame Street in Dublin, called Cheng salon.  They're having a 20% off haircuts promotion at the moment, so my haircut came to €22.50, woo hoo!

I did up the spare room in the house, finally!  I spent most of my free money on it and also got curtains for the bedroom that I need to put up pronto cos it's freezing in here!  Hopefully that's the plan for this weekend if the roads are ok and I can drive to Ikea and pick up curtain poles and whatever else I need.  I would lovvvvvve this for my makeup, jewellery, beauty products, nail varnishes etc  It would be excellent to have them all in one thingy and hidden away :)

So the plan of action this week is to firstly, arrive alive at work and home each day.  The weather conditions at the moment will have something to say about that, so hopefully we're all ok getting to and from work!  Secondly, weather permitting again, I'm hoping to go to the shopping event in TK MAXX this Thursday evening.  I got a pair of fleece mittens from there 2 weeks ago and love them, all I'm missing is the string that goes up through the arms of my coat to make sure I don't lose them hehe  Thirdly, weather permitting again, am hoping to go to my bruvvers apartment on Wednesday and have a look see and have the chats.  That's the extent of the weekly plans hehe  This snow/ice/freezing conditions will be a pain in the bum but what can we do?

Right, that's the chats for tonight.  Am off to prepare for X Factor results show, here's hoping Katie and Wagner are given the boot!!

Bailey in the snow :)

I had to write an ickle post to show you all Bailey my cockapoo doggie having a ball in the snow hehe  He absolutely loves it and even though it makes his toes cold and gives him snowballs in the beard, he's a happy chappy out in it :)

Pantene Nature Fusion Leave-in Conditioner

This product has been my saviour over these past couple of weeks :)  As the weather gets colder, so does my bathroom.  Hence, I need to get in and out of the shower as quickly as possible.  There's nothing worse than messing around in the shower waiting for your 3 minutes of conditioning to be up, nah, not for me.

So this is my little gem that I bought months ago and used sporadically since.  Lately, I've been using it more and more.  I wash my hair with whatever's in the shower at the time and then towel dry my hair.  I use one squirt of the product since I got my hair cut, but before then, I was using two.  *warning*  It might just be my container, but when I try squirting the product from the pump dispenser, it squirts everywhere!  It ends up all over my clothes, all over the dresser, carpet etc  You get the picture :)  So I cup my hand around the dispenser to avoid that, so don't say I didn't warn you!

Once it's in the palm of my hand, I rub my hands together, flip my head over and start applying it to the back of the hair and then to the front, avoiding the roots.  I go ahead and dry my hair and it really does leave my hair so soft and shiny.  I also used it the other day after trying to get to grips with Lush's Jungle Solid Conditioner.  It applied it the same way into my dry hair and it was restored to healthy looking hair.  I love Pantene products but this is a must buy in my opinion.  Boots always have some offer on with Pantene be it buy 2 get 1 free or buy 2 for €5, so keep an eye out.

It doesn't weigh my hair down, doesn't leave it greasy and doesn't leave it sticky.  Just gorgeous soft hair.

Has anyone tried this and if so what did ye think?  Or are there any better leave-in conditioners out there that I should try??

Lush Jungle Solid Conditioner Review

I forgot to put this in my list of what I got in Newry last Saturday!  Since there is now a Lush shop in The Quays Shopping Centre in Newry, I couldn't walk by it without having a looksee :)  I love trying all things Lush, sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't.

I've been meaning to try the Jungle Solid Conditioner for ages and finally remembered to get it this time.  They had a massive barrel of it and also little puck sized versions of it.  I decided on the small, cute puck which was only £2.75.  I thought, bargain!  It smells gorgeous, as I said before, I'm rubbish at describing smells, so I'll just say it's not fruity, it smells clean and green, hope that helps!

I asked the girl how you go about using it and she said that I could either hold it in my hands till it melts a bit and then rub my hands through my hair, or scrape a little chunk off it, add a bit of water and make a little paste, then applying it to my hair.  She also said I can use it as a leave in conditioner or a styling product, applying it to my hair when dry.  This sounded great to me :)

Lush's website says "Jungle feels different on your hair from liquid conditioner; until you wash it off, you hardly notice it's there. It smoothes and detangles, leaving a fruitily scented coat of shininess. Smooth it along the length of your hair from root to tip, then rinse out."

I couldn't wait to try it out, so after shampooing my hair, I got to work on figuring out how to use it.  I used my nail to scrape a bit off the bottom and place it in my palm.  I then added some hot water and tried to dissolve the conditioner in it.  It dissolved a bit but not completely, at which point I was getting annoyed so I just rubbed the product through my hair.  It felt like there was nothing at all in my hair, but thought, that's ok, that's what the website says to expect.  So just in case, I took the bar and rubbed it through the ends of my hair, just to be sure!

I rinsed my hair and it didn't feel any different at all.  Usually when I use conditioner, I use a decent amount and my hair feels soft when I'm rinsing it out.  Anyway, I went about drying my hair and it didn't feel soft at allllllll!!  It felt kind of brittle, not soft or shiny at all.  I ended up having to squirt some of my L'oreal Elvive Damage Care Conditioning Repair Spray to help the hair, which it immediately did.  I had soft shiny hair :)

So maybe I'm using this wrong.  Has anyone tried it or knows a better way of using it?  I just read a comment on the Lush site where someone talks about soaking chunks in water until the conditioner softens completely, leaving a paste.  But then it's not solid conditioner anymore!  I want something I could travel with alongside my solid shampoo bar that's light and works.

I'm not ready to give up on this little beaut yet, so I'll keep you posted but if anyone has any ideas or recommendations on how I can use this with more success, please let me know in the comments below :) Thanks!

China Glaze Holiday 2010

As I mentioned in my previous post detailing my little shopping trip in Newry, I got these two nail varnishes in Sally's Beauty Supply from China Glaze.

On the left we have Cheers to you and on the right we have Party Hearty.  Cheers to you is a gorgeous silver metallic varnish with fine silver glitters in it.  It dries to a shiny sparkley finish and I love this so much!  I think this would be a great nail varnish to give yourself a french tip manicure if you had a dark nail varnish on that had started to chip at the tips.  I love doing this when I'm too lazy to take off all the varnish and reapply from scratch.

Cheers to You - with flash

Cheers to You - no flash
Party Hearty is absolutely brilliant :)  It's a clear nail varnish with large, red hexagonal glitters, smaller green hexagonal glitters and tiny silver glitters.  I took pictures of this on it's own just to show you what it's like.

Party Hearty - no flash

But it's a varnish that you would need to apply it over another polish to get the full effect of it.  To make it easy for me, I applied it over Cheers to you.

Here it is with one coat of Party Hearty over Cheers to you:

Next is two coats
I love these two nail varnishes and can't wait to wear them over the Christmas season :)  What do you think?  Do we love?!

Little shopping trip goodies

So I headed up to Newry with the sister and the mothership on Saturday for a day out.  I like heading up there to see what's on offer and to hit their Superdrug and Sally's Beauty Supply for a few items we can't get in the South.

First of all let's start with Superdrug.  I was very good in here and only bought what I'd had on my list.  First of all and top of the list was the latest Sleek palette.  It's called Bad Girl and I'm sure you've heard about it online.  It has 12 eyeshadows which are all right up my street so I can't wait to start playing around with it and coming up with looks.  This was £5.99 and well worth it in my book.

I've been wanting to try Sleek's Kajal eyeliner for ages but kept forgetting when I got to the shop but not this time!  This was £3.99 and my first impressions are that I'm going to like this, it's soft and creamy and while hopefully making a good eyeliner, I'm thinking it might make a good eyeshadow base.  Swatches and reviews to follow.  Here it is in all it's glory:

Next I got 3 more shades of the MUA eyeshadows, at £1 each, I couldn't resist.  They had much more of a selection than the Superdrug in Santry but I was good and only picked up the shades I thought I'd use.  Below we have Shade 14, Shade 11 and Shade 3.  On first swatch, Shade 11 might be a dupe for MAC's tempting, but need to research that further :)

The girl at the register in Superdrug in Newry was so nice, as she was ringing my items through, she said that there was an offer going on that if you spent £10 you got a voucher for £3, or something like that hehe She was so nice and rang some items through to bring it to £10.99, then rang the rest through and I got £3 off, so I basically got those 3 eyeshadows for free :) Bargain.com!

Ladies, I have left the best till last.  I went to Sallys Beauty Supply to see what nail varnishes they had.  I've no idea where we can get OPI or China Glaze in Dublin, so I always have to have a lookie when I go to Newry.  I got these 2 babies:

The one on the left is called Cheers to You, it's a gorgeous silvery sparkley varnish that is beautiful and I can't wait to wear.  Just look at the varnish on the right :)  I know I said this about China Glaze's Ruby Pumps, but if Christmas was a nail varnish, it would be this one!  It's called Party Hearty and I lovvvvvvvvvvvve it!! It's a clear nail varnish with tiny silver glitter, slightly bigger green glitter and bigger red glitter all through it.  These 2 nail varnishes deserve their own post, so keep an eye out for them.  They were £5.99 each.

Did anyone buy anything exciting over the weekend?? Tell all :)

Little Christmas present idea

Last week when having a wander in town looking for stuff to buy for my bessie friend who just had a baby, I came across these little babies and had to buy them for her.  I showed my sister who then had to buy herself a pair, then today she came home with two pairs for me and another pair for herself hehe

I bring you the snuggliest pair of socks ever....

They are a mere €3 from Penneys and I have them on right now.  They come in pink/cream and grey/cream.  They're completely lined with fleece and they have little plastic dots on the soles so you won't go flying.

I think these would be a great idea for a Secret Santa present, or for yourself as a little treat :)

Playtime with Konad

It was time for me to have a go at the Konad nail stamping system on myself to see how I fared.  I had done it on my sister's nails here, but now it was the time for me to bite the bullet and try it on my own :)

This is what I used:

I used Catrice's nail varnish in shade 190 Wrapped Around My Finger and the Konad nail plate m9 along with the white Konad varnish, the scraper, stamper and a cotton pad soaked in nail varnish remover.

I had applied the Catrice nail varnish the day before so I thought using the stamping system would be a great way to perk up the nails a bit without having to do them all over again! So please forgive the messy nails below :)

I started by cleaning off the design I wanted to use on the m9 plate using the nail varnish remover on the cotton pad and let it dry.  You'll see which design I picked a bit later.  I then applied a coat of the white varnish onto the design like so:

I then scraped over the template and cleaned the scraper off quickly with the cotton pad leaving the design filled with the white nail varnish.

I then rolled the stamp over the design, giving me this:

I found it was better to roll the stamp slowly and firmly to make sure it picked up as much of the nail varnish as possible.  Cute!! Then I lined the stamp alongside my nail and rolled it over the nail slowly and firmly giving me this on my very messy thumbnail!

I did the same for each nail and it was pretty easy to be honest.  Now granted, not all of the stamps are straight on each nail but who cares, I love them :)

I love these type of things that look like it took you ages to do, when really it was easy peasy and very quick!  I had a lot of comments about them and would recommend everyone have a go.  I really want to try the plates that have the leopard print design and the different french tip designs, they might be an addition to my Christmas wish list!

One look - Two prices - Simple browns

Can you tell the difference between my two eyes?

This is the third installment of the One Look - Two Prices series :)  I must say I'm delighted with this one!  Above, we have a drugstore eye and a higher end makeup eye.

I just decided to do a very simple look once I decided what shadows I was going to use.  These are the products I used.

On one eye I used the ever so famous Satin Taupe from MAC and Bare Escentuals Buxom Lash Mascara, while on the other eye I used essence's eyeshadow in shade 09 and Collection 2000's Big Fake False Lash Effect Mascara.  Let's look at the shadows more closely.

You can see from the photos above that Satin Taupe has a slightly more purple undertone to it, where essence shade 09 has a gold undertone.  That being said, when they are applied, there is hardly any difference at all!  Have a look again:

So the reveal is on the left is MAC's Satin Taupe and on the right is essence shade 09!  Not bad at all considering that MAC shadows are €15 (thanks beaut.ie for that!) and essence shadows are €1.99.  The essence shadow is more crumbly than the MAC one but for a fraction of the cost, I would most definitely recommend you try the essence shadows, especially this one :)

What do you guys think?  Were you able to tell the difference?

My first time with Konad :)

I know I'm very behind the times regarding the whole Konad nail stencil but thanks to The Beauty Swap Siopa on Beaut.ie, I took part in a swap and got a cute little nail set!

My nails are in bits at the moment, they keep peeling and flaking, so I did my sister's nails to show y'all how I got on.

First of all, this is what the little set looked like.

It comes with 3 nail polishes, I'm missing a blue one, tiny rhinestones, the stamper, scraper and two nail plates.  The nail plates are labelled m4 and m9.

Plate m4

Plate m9

Stamper and scraper
I've watched youtube videos on how to do this properly, so I was dying to have a go.  I started by applying two coats of Revlon's Cherries in the Snow to my sister's annoyingly perfect nails.  When they were dry, she picked out the stencil she wanted and off we went.  I used the white nail varnish that came with the set.  I had messed around with a french manicure white polish that I have in my collection but it was slightly thinner in consistency than the Konad one.

Topcoat, Revlon's Cherries in the Snow, Konad white nail varnish

All I did was apply a thick layer of polish over the stencil we were using, scraped it off using the scraper, rolled the stamper over the stencil and had a little look see to make sure it had transferred properly to the stamper.  I then lined the stamper up to her nail as best I could and rolled it over her nail, leaving a lovely little flowery design.

I did this to all ten nails.  Some attempts were easier than others for some reason.  If the design didn't transfer to the stamper properly, I wiped it off with a cotton pad soaked in nail varnish remover and tried again.

I've never had my nails done in a salon before (I don't like people at my nails for some reason!) but I was pretty happy with how this turned out.  I applied a top coat over the top and that was it!  These are worth a try and would be a nice Christmas present for a girly girl :)
