Maybelline Volum' Express The Mega Plush mascara review - before and after photos

Over the past few weeks, I saw the Maybelline Volum' Express The Mega Plush mascara in literally every chemist I visited and was getting a bit weirded out.  It was like the universe was trying to tell me that I needed to try it, but I was trying to be good and use the mascaras I already have.  But still, every time I ended up in a chemist, I'd pick it up, then talk myself out of it, then pick it up again and start the justification process before running out of the chemist shrieking with the stress of it all.

Well, it turned out the universe did want me and The Mega Plush mascara to be together because it arrived on my doorstep like a gift from the gods.  The Maybelline gods.

As you know, I'm a fan of bright packaging when it comes to mascaras, so it gets bonus points for that.  But hello Mr Bendy Wand.  I haven't seen you before.  The flexible wand promises to caress the lashes but I don't see much bending when I'm applying my mascara.  Oh and please resist the urge to go boinggg with it or you'll end up with mascara juice all over your face.

The gel-mousse formula is one of the most lightweight ones I've come across in ages and it really feels like I've hardly anything on my lashes.  There's not a hint of crunchiness and I can get through a work day with nary a smudge or flake to be seen.

It adds length to my lashes and the much loved drama that I need when it comes to mascaras.  I've been wearing it to work every day for the past couple of weeks and love it.  I'm very much in the more-is-more camp when it comes to mascaras and while I do like natural wispy lashes, my heart lies with drama and volume.
Volum' Express The Mega Plush mascara adds lift and curl to my weeny little lashes.  It doesn't completely separate them, but I'm ok with that as I think slight clumping adds drama.  I'd have no problem at all wearing this on a night out and while I'm wearing just the one coat in the photos here, I'd lash on a second for a bit of extra oomph.

Maybelline Volum' Express The Mega Plush is in chemists and grocery stores nationwide now and retails at €11.99.  I'm so glad we were finally brought together!

Have you tried this mascara yet?

Joanne's summery outfit from New Look and Dunnes!

Yesterday Joanne and I got to be part of something very exciting indeed.  But annoyingly, it's something we can't talk about yet, but we'll fill you in when we can!  An exciting thing like this calls for panic buying and I stepped in for Joanne like the good sister/personal shopper I am.

Joanne has so many clothes, she could open her own shop and yet was freaking out that she had nothing to wear to something that would be outside and where a BBQ would be involved.  Cut to me running to our local New Look in Northside shopping centre, which is now a sale shop if anyone lives close to it.  I picked her up a dress that I'll show you in a sec but ah look at us here in the sunshine.

So we didn't know for sure what the weather was going to be like, so I was hoping to find Joanne a maxi dress (even though she has eleventy million at home).  I found this one and after mailing a quick photo to her, she said to get it and hope they did refunds just in case.  But I knew she'd love it.  She bought the little denim jacket in Dunnes for €20 and with the dress only being €13, it was a proper bargainous outfit so it was.

The maxi dress comes with a little belt attached and has an elastic band at the top to prevent one's diddies from falling out.  The fabric is floaty, flowy and perfect for a spot of dining outside or a walk on one's holliers.

I loved the floral design as soon as I saw it and thought it was the perfect summery maxi guna!

Of course, one needs a bag for all of one's needs and this one is from Lucky Brand, a brand Joanne and I fell in love with years ago in New York.

In case it got a bit cold (which it did slightly in the shade), Joanne bought this cropped denim jacket in Dunnes which worked well with the dress and was comfy.

And voila!  A lovely casual summery outfit!

The maxi dress was on sale so mightn't be in shops now, but this one is very similar, as is this one.

Doesn't Joanne look purty?

The Body Shop Brazil Nut Collection returns!

Who knew the humble Brazil nut smells absolutely gorgeous?  And why did it disappear?  Luckily for us, the Brazil nut collection from The Body Shop has made a welcome return to Irish shores and the line up has something for everyone's budget.

Containing sustainably harvested Community Fair Trade Brazil nut oil, this helps protect over 3000 hectares of Peruvian rainforests by providing a livelihood for the nut collectors and nut crackers who are part of the Candela co-operative.  Candela works with more than 270 nut gatherers who have rights to hand harvest Brazil nuts from the Madre de Dios region, providing an alternative to logging and illegal goldmining which results in deforestation and pollution.

I was sent some of the goodies to play with and being a newbie to the Brazil nut scent, I hadn't a clue what it would smell like.  Well, let me tell you that it's sweet, nutty, vanilla-y, almost chocolate-y, but has a warmth to it that stops it from being too sickly sweet.  I always thought that the Chocolate range from The Body Shop was too sweet for my schnozz, and didn't get what people loved about it, but I realise that I was waiting for the Brazil nut range.

You might already know that I'm a huge fan of the Beautifying Oils (€15) from The Body Shop and have converted some of my friends to them too.  This one is no different and can be used to moisturise your body, face, remove make up and work as a hair treatment.  The Body Mist (€13.95) offers a light, sweet, caramel scent and makes me smell like a delicious dessert and yes, I have to keep Bailey away from me as he thinks I'm a tasty treat.  The soap free Shower Cream (€8.95)lathers beautifully, doesn't dry out my skin, and smells nuttily amazing.

Completing the collection is a Cream Scrub (€18.95), a Body Butter (€18.95), Eau de Toilette (€13.95) and a soap (€3.95).

If you're a fan of sweet, nutty scents and want to pamper your skin with some gorgeous products, then definitely check out the Brazil nut range in shops now.

Real Techniques Limited Edition duo fiber brush set - review

To say I love my trusty Real Techniques brushes would be an understatement.  I've used my Buffing Brush almost every single day since buying it last year and don't even get me started on the blush or powder brushes!  When I heard Samantha Chapman was bringing out a limited edition set, I knew I'd have to have them, end of.

I bought mine on iherb.com, but they'll be available in Boots very soon if they're not already and Cloud10Beauty will be stocking them at the start of June.

So the limited edition set consists of three duo fiber brushes, except they're not technically duo fiber since all of the bristles are synthetic taklon, as are all of the Real Techniques brushes.  There's a face brush, a contour brush and an eyeshadow blending brush.  This time the handles are white with the logo printed on them and of course, me being the weirdo I am, wondered if that's Sam's actual signature because if it is, she's got grand penmanship.

The whole thing with duo fiber brushes is that there are longer bristles, in this case, the white ones, which pick up the product.  Then as you start to blend the product into your face, the white bristles separate and allow the shorter bristles, the black ones, to blend the product.  It means you'll have a perfectly blended cheek, face or eyelid.

The face brush and contour brush are wider when you hold them flat, but when you turn them to the side, they're more narrow and so you'll be able to do a grand bit of contouring with either of them.  The eye brush is round, making it the perfect blending brush.

There's a decent amount of give in the face brush and if you're someone who's new to make up, or find yourself a bit heavy handed with powders, then a brush like this will suit you well.  It doesn't pick up a lot of product and means you can layer your powders lightly without ending up looking like Aunt Sally.  I find this brush works perfectly with loose powders rather than pressed, as the bristles pick up loose powder better and seem to dislodge a lot of the pressed powder if that makes sense.

The contour brush is a bit more rigid, meaning it's ideal for chiseling out those cheekbones or using with cream products.  A lot of people are afraid of using cream products as they're worried they might pack too much on.  Using a brush like this allows you to pick up the right amount of product and blend it easily.  I'm all about cream products at the moment and this brush works wonderfully with them.

The blending brush is lovely and again, if you're new to make up or aren't au fait with blending, it's definitely worth a look.  As I mentioned above, the white bristles pick up your eyeshadow and as you work it into your eyelid, the black bristles blend the product in.  Easy peasy.  I used it last night when playing around with a new eyeshadow and it was fantastic.  I was able to achieve a gradient look with minimal effort.

All three brushes are a joy to use and a welcome addition to my already rather large brush collection.  They should be in Boots now, or keep an eye on Cloud10Beauty over the next couple of weeks.  The limited edition set will be available for a year, so you've plenty of time to pick them up.

Speaking of Cloud10Beauty, they have an offer at the moment on their Real Techniques brushes where if you spend €20, you get 10% off and if you spend €40, you get 20% off, so now is the time to stock up on brushes!

So will you be trying these brushes out?

Sally Hansen Shore-ly - the perfect nude nail polish!

Regular readers of the blog will know that I'm not a big fan of the nude nail trend.  I've always figured, sure go bright, go sparkly, go glittery, but never go nudey.  Until now.  One of the polishes from Sally Hansen's Exotica collection, Shore-ly, has won me over like no other nude polish!

I've worn it a couple of times over the past few weeks and couldn't put my finger on what it was exactly that made it different to the other nudes in my collection.  After much pondering and pontificating, I realised that it's a much cooler toned nude than my other ones.  The other ones are darker, warmer and aren't enough of a contrast against my skin tone and thus end up making my fingers look like big fat sausages.

Shore-ly, however, doesn't have any sausage like tendencies and is by far the most flattering nude for me to wear.  Like me, it's chic and sophisticated *ahem*

Now, if nudes aren't really your thing or if you want to jazz up your nudey manicure a bit, then get yourself a glittery polish and one of the sponge tipped applicators that comes with make up palettes but we never use.  If you put a couple of blobs of glittery polish onto a piece of card, you can use the sponge to dab the polish onto your nails.

I've got four easy ways to bling up a nudey manicure but they can be done with any colours, go wild I tell you!

1. Just paint a layer of the glitter on top of your polish.  You can leave it as is or put a top coat over it.
2. Using the sponge tipped applicator, dab the glitter on, starting at the base of your nails and working towards the middle.
3. Or dab the glitter polish on, starting from the tips of your nails and working towards the middle.
4. Add a layer of the glitter polish and allow to dry.  Then add a matte top coat and voila!

And that's it!  Nude nails with a bit of a twist!

What's your favourite nude polish?  You can find Shore-ly and the rest of the Exotica collection in chemists and grocery stores nationwide now at €8.95.

Vichy Beautifying Sun Protection Compact review - before and after photos

As a self confessed beauty junkie, I have a lot of beauty products.  And as a lady, I carry around a handbag.  The bigger the bag, the more crap I carry around.  So in an attempt to whittle things down, I've undertaken a mission to find the best multi tasking products, so I don't have to carry around a wheely suitcase instead of a handbag.

This product is amazing....  And it's orange....

The Vichy Beautifying Sun Protection Compact protects like a sun cream, spreads like a fluid, mattifies like a powder and beautifies like a foundation.  I know.  This is groundbreaking stuff and is a lot to take in all in one go isn't it?

Let's go through it step by step shall we because it sounds too good to be true.  So it has the protection of a sun cream you say?  With SPF 30, it offers broad spectrum protection and protects against UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

It has the texture of a foundation you say?  This is where it gets interesting for me.  I haven't used a cream foundation in years because I've always found them too thick for my skin.  Well slap my ass and call me Sally when I tell you that I'm converted to this one.  Despite looking thick in the compact, the dry oils and emollients in the formulation allow me to work it into my skin in seconds.  Now it comes with a sponge underneath the product, but I don't use it.  I prefer my Real Techniques Buffing Brush as I can really work it into my skin and you'll see below why.

It absorbs like a powder you say?  I've used cream to powder products in the past before and haven't been a fan of what the product looks like when it sets.  I've found them to look really powdery and drying, but not in this case.  This contains perlite, kaolin and talc which absorb excess oils and sweat giving a matte finish that doesn't look powdery.

Now, the before and after photos.  I can't get over how flawless my skin looks in these photos and I kept having to go and check myself out in the mirror to make sure my skin really did look that good.  As I mentioned above, I use my Real Techniques brush to work the product into the skin and using that means I can take a little at a time and make sure it's all blended properly.

It feels light and comfortable on my skin and you can see in the photos that it gives my skin a matte finish and really does even out my skin tone and makes it look like I've been airbrushed!  But you can also see that despite the gorgeous finish, my skin doesn't look cakey and my skin still shows through from underneath.

The Vichy Beautifying Sun Protection Compact comes in two shades, Sandy Beige, which is what I was sent to try, and Golden Beige.  It retails at €19.50 and is worth every penny in my opinion.  Summer holidays are coming up and if you want something that will protect your skin, work as a foundation and keep shine at bay, then you definitely need to check this one out.  It's the perfect travel companion but alas, I don't have any summer holidays booked, so will be using it to look after and beautify my skin in (hopefully) sunny Ireland!

Vichy, you've done it again.  After last year's Capital Soleil Anti-Shine Dry Touch Emulsion which knocked it out of the park for those of us with oily skin, the Beautifying Sun Protection Compact is going to be another summer stable pour moi!

My Favourite Five posts of the week from my fellow bloggers - week 20!

Week 20 already?!  Holy moly!  I find myself using Bloglovin' more and more recently and it's a much better way of keeping all the blogs I love in one place.  With Google reader, I couldn't delete the inactive ones without logging in to each blog individually, which was very annoying altogether, so I'm a total Bloglovin' convert now!  You can follow the blog here if you should be so inclined!

So here are my Favourite Five posts of the week from my fellow bloggers.  The posts that inspired me, that made me want to buy things and that I thought of long after reading them.

I've been a long time fan of Halima over at Fashionicide and have been obsessed with her blog for ages now!  Her photos are always gorgeous and oh so inspiring.  This week she showed us how to do turquoise ombre on her hair and I wish I was brave enough to do that myself!  It looks fabulous on her and you never know, someday I might lose the run of myself and do something like this!

This week I met fellow Irish blogger Rachel from Nails By Numbers at an event and she was so lovely!  We had a grand chat and I couldn't help but admire her nails which you can check out here on her blog.  So ca-ute!

We all know that Mags from Emerald Eyeliner loves Stila.  Even if you don't know her, you'll probably have heard that anyway as she is famous for it!  This week she's showing us Stila's new Color Balm lipsticks, complete with swatches and I love every single one of them.... Go forth and drool people.

Fi from MakeupSavvy showed us Sally Hansen's Insta-Dri Speed Dry Drops this week and I really want to try them now!  She's all about finding affordable products that work and this one is cheap as chips and works, so colour moi intrigued!

You know I love my Tangle Teezer.  Well, now I need to get my paws on the Aqua Splash version that I can bring into the shower and not worry that the water is going to get trapped in the middle of it!  Thanks to The Sunday Girl for that one, I'm off to to a bit of googling to see where we can get it here in Ireland.

What was the favourite post you read this week?   Leave it in the comments below!

Pit of the week and peak of the week - week 20!

After two busy weeks that seemed to drag on like mad, this week flew by in a jiffy!

The pit of my week relates to the peak of my week and is a common occurance pour moi!  Ok, some of you might know that I have issues with IBS and when I'm nervous, anxious, excited, the pain comes.  On Monday, we uploaded our first YouTube video and I was so nervous, I spent the entire day afraid to look at my phone and with the ultimate bloats.  I was scared that our humour wouldn't come across, that people would think we were gobshites and that it would be a big, fat failure.

The peak of my week is without a doubt, how well the video was received by everyone!  We showed that we don't take ourselves seriously at all and I think people got that.  Hopefully we'll keep making videos as long as people want to watch them!

There are some fantastic Irish YouTubers out there at the moment and we're delighted to be in such great company.  I'm not sure what direction the channel will take, but right now, we're going to concentrate on more demonstrations, show and tell, chatty videos.  Lots of times, I want to write blog posts on things that I feel I could talk about easier, so I've some ideas for future videos and might expand on some previous blog posts.  We'll be doing a little getting to know us video soon where we'll explain that we are sisters, not mother and bloody daughter (a question asked on the BaByliss video - le sigh)!

So thank you to everyone who watched, subscribed and gave the videos a big thumbs up.  Hand on heart, we didn't think that we'd have 65 subscribers or over 900 views on the BaByliss video in the first week!  If you missed when we posted the videos, here they are in all their glory!

How was your week?

Colour Pop at Style Club North Earl Street

This week found me in the Style Club salon on North Earl Street, one of my recent discoveries in the hair world!  I'm a northsider and am always wandering past the brightly coloured salon.  So late last year, I went in for a wash a blow dry, to test the waters so to speak.  I'm very careful who I let near my locks with a scissors, but my stylist Lindsay did a fantastic job with the blow dry and I was a happy chappy.  Then in March, I was heading to an event and needed a quick snip and blow dry.  Once again, Lindsay worked her magic and my hair was fabulous!  I left there a happy customer again.

I was invited to try one of the treatments available in Style Club called Colour Pop, but was a bit hesitant as I'm currently rocking hombre/gradient/balayage/roots and didn't know if it would work for me or not.  But I went along to learn about the treatment in any case.

How cute is the inside of the salon!

The Colour Pop treatment is essentially a conditioning treatment for your locks, but with a twist.  It's tinted and lasts for eight washes.  There are 22 shades altogether and a clear one that just provides the treatment and shine without colour.  That was exactly what I wanted, so Lindsay got busy on my hair!

After washing my tresses, the Colour Pop treatment was applied and left on for 15 minutes while I relaxed the kax and enjoyed my massaging chair, careful not to nod off.  After Lindsay chopped off the dead ends and tidied up my layers, she gave me a gorgeous curly blow dry.  There's nothing better than leaving a salon like a bridie from a hair ad, flicking and swishing your hair because you know it looks fabulous!  My hair was soft, shiny and super swishy and I've washed it twice since then and it's still shining bright like a diamond.

If you're going to a party or a night out on the town, or even want to give yourself a little treat before heading away on holidays, then the Colour Pop treatment is definitely worth a shot and it's on special at the moment at €16 with a cut.  And I'd totally recommend Lindsay for styling and chats, so tell her I sent you!

You can contact Style Club North Earl Street here and book yourself in for a Color Pop treatment.  I'm deciding what I want to do with my hair in terms of colour at the moment, but I know if I decide on a specific colour, I'll have to try out the corresponding Color Pop for the craic!

Maybelline Color Sensational Cream Gloss - Coral Blush, photos and review

As if by magic, we're starting to see a tiny bit more sun these days.  I'm afraid to say anything else in case I jinx it and ruin summer for us completely.  But that yellow ball in the sky does something to me in terms of make up and makes me want to channel my inner J Lo.  I'm talking glowy skin, bronzed cheekbones and glossy lips.  So when on a recent expedition to Boots where I bought these babies and there was a 3 for 2 offer going on, I decided to try one of the Maybelline Color Sensational Cream Glosses.  It was love at first sight and when I saw the name, Coral Blush, the love was intensified.  Even though it's not coral.

Anyway, here's the packaging.  It's sleek and pretty and I can see how much gloss I have left in the tube at all times.

My first thought when I clapped eyes on the gloss was Oooh if Nars Orgasm had a lipgloss it would be this.  Turns out Nars does have an Orgasm lipgloss and isn't as pigmented as this.  And to me, Coral Blush looks so much more like Nars Orgasm blush than the matching lipgloss.  So if you're looking for an affordable close dupe to that, then look no further than Color Blush.

This peachy gloss is packed full of gold shimmer and is going to look even more gorgeous with a tan.  It's really creamy, feels moisturising on the lips and isn't sticky.

Coral Blush has fast become one of my favourite everyday lip products to use.  It's really flattering on my skin tone, looks more beautiful when the sun decides to shine on it and is a shade I can apply without having to use a mirror.  It lasts a couple of hours and the cream base fades away before the shimmer does.

I'm loving my first foray into the Color Sensational Cream Glosses and will definitely be trying more in the future!  I'll update the post once I get confirmation of the price, but it's in the €7-€10 range, ish.  Note to self, keep receipts!

Have you tried any of these yet?  What shade do I need to try next?

NYC Big Bold Curl mascara review - before and after photos

A mascara that costs the same price as a cup of cawfee and won't give you the jitters?  Sign me up!  Budget friendly brand NYC's latest offering in the mascara department promises 12 times more volume and up to 99% more lift.  This arrived at Girlie Towers a while back and was rediscovered when I was organising my stash last month.  Let's take a closer look at it shall we?

Now, let's talk wands.  You know I like a grand big wand but this is by far the biggest wand I've ever had this close to my eyeball.  And I was nervous for the first time ever using a mascara!  Do you know how weird it is to be bringing something close to your own eyeball and leaning your head back at the same time?  It's massive but once you get to grips with it, it's plain sailing as the bristles comb through the lashes effortlessly, separating and lifting them.

As a mascara fiend, fiend I tell you, I have different mascaras for different needs.  The Big Bold Curl mascara promises both volume and curl and it certainly delivers on both of those.  It gives volume without plonking a load of product on the lashes and gives an almost wispy, feathery look making it a perfect day time mascara for me.

In terms of curl, it holds my lashes up effortlessly all day.  I'm a huge advocate of applying lots of mascara to the outer lashes to elongate my eyes and to give them a little lift.  I need all the help I can in that department!  I want to look wide eyed and bushy tailed and this definitely gives me the wide eyed effect.

It definitely gives length to my little non existent lashes and you can see from the photo above that there's no clumping at all at all.

For €3.49, you can't go wrong.  This is a fantastic every day mascara and well worth giving a shot.  Did I mention it was €3.49?  You probably have that much in coppers in your purse.  No excuse!

L'Oreal Skin Perfection 15 Second Miracle Cleansing Oil, Radiance Revealing Gentle Exfoliator, 3 in 1 Purifying Micellar Solution

As you know, I've been tormenting you with the concept of ditching the make up wipes and starting a proper skincare routine.  You might not believe me but I guarantee your skin will thank you!  I'm really lucky that I'm sent products to review for the blog, some expensive and some affordable.  My number one comment when it comes to skincare is the cost.  And I do appreciate that everyone is on a budget these days.  Thankfully, L'Oreal have released some new skincare goodies that are purse friendly and pretty fantastic.

The Skin Perfection Cleansers is a collection of nine products that cater for everyone's skin, be it combination, normal, dull, sensitive or dry and yes, wipes are one of the products, but I won't hold that against them!

You have to know at this point in our relationship as blogger/reader that I am obsessed with cleansing oils.  They're just amazing and a lot of people with oily/combination skin are afraid to use them in case they make the skin even oilier.  Here's all you need to know: in a nutshell, they balance the oil production of your skin.

The Skin Perfection 15 Second Miracle Cleansing Oil is a really lightweight oil that is a joy to use.  I apply about three to four pumps into the palms of my hands and rub my hands together to distribute it evenly before massaging it into my skin.  There's nothing nicer than working the product into the skin and watching it break down my make up, mascara and all.  You know I've sensitive eyes and it doesn't irritate my peepers at all.  After you've worked the oil into your skin, you can either add water to it and watch it emulsify before rinsing it off, or use a damp muslin cloth or face cloth to remove it, leaving you with clean, soft skin.

Next on our list is the Skin Perfection 3 in 1 Purifying Micellar Solution.  Micellar cleansers are all the rage at the moment and whereas I don't use them to cleanse my skin, I use them all the time to remove my make up, eye make up and all, before cleansing again.  If I'm going out from work and don't want to pile more make up on top of old make up, then I use micellars and this one from L'Oreal is gorgeous.

Micellar cleansers work by attracting the oils and impurities away from your skin like magic.  You don't have to rub, scrub or use any elbow grease at all.  This one cleanses, tones and hydrates the skin and doesn't strip any oils from the skin or dry it out.  They're one of those products that are handy to bring travelling as you don't need separate eye make up remover and at €7.69, is worth every penny.  And a little tip is to keep this close by with a Q tip to correct any eyeshadow mistakes one might make if one is in a rush and trying to complete one's look before legging it out the door.

Now, who doesn't love a bit of exfoliation? I go through phases of having dull skin and there's nothing that perks it up like a good scrub.  How amazing is it to put your moisturiser on over perfectly smooth skin?  Things like that just make up happy.  The Skin Perfection Radiance Revealing Gentle Exfoliator pretty much does what it says on the tin.

This wonderfully citrusy smelling exfoliator has lots of microbeads suspended in a clear gel and it refines the skin's texture, leaving me with smooth soft skin.  It's soap free so doesn't dry out the aul visage which is always good and I love using this in the morning to wake me up.  It's a mere €6.99 and if you're looking for something gentle and effective, then look no further.

The moral of the story when it comes to skincare is that you don't have to break the bank to get products that work.  If you commit to a routine, your skin will thank you for it and you won't want to go back to make up wipes!

Have you tried any of the Skin Perfection range yet?
