Our New Year's Resolutions for 2014!

Like I said this time last year, I'm all about resolving to do new things at any point during the year and in 2013, I did just that but I love the start of a new year and making plans!  I know some people are very against others making new year's resolutions and have seen some rather angry tweets to that effect, but who cares?!  What difference does it make to your life whether someone feels inspired and motivated to make new plans, try new things, attempt to better themselves?  Who cares if they decide they want to join a gym and only go twice?  Who cares if they've eaten so much rubbish over Christmas and want to do a detox or start a diet?  Let them and sure it won't affect your life at all at all!

For me, the start of a new year feels like standing at the top of a mountain and I can see everything the year has to offer for miles and miles.  I feel strong and I feel happy.  2013 was a year of changes for me and for the first time in many years, I'm really looking forward to the next year.  After moving to Canada back in 1999, realising I was so homesick for nearly 5 years, having my marriage ending and dad passing away, I spent so many years just going through the motions of life and I can truly say that for the first time in ages, I feel like myself again.  I'm ready to start the new year on a high, rather than on a meh!

So Joanne and I have been doing some thinking about what we want to achieve for 2014.

I'll go first shall I?

1. I will finish a lip product and a nail polish this year.  Lip balms don't count.  And neither do topcoats.  I think I've put this as one of my resolutions for the past couple of years and one year I'll do it, will 2014 be the one?!

2. I will set myself a monthly beauty budget.  Lots of people think that because I get sent products to review, I don't buy anything myself.  So not true!  I love all things beauty related and have this need deep down in my soul to try everything that's out there!  So I need to pull things back a bit and set myself a monthly budget.  What that budget is, I've no idea yet, but I'll give it a whirl and see how I get on because I've to save for New York baby!

3. I will continue to lose weight.  I haven't mentioned this except to a few people in real life, but I joined Slimming World back in September and have lost some weight.  I've still a long way to go, but I'm doing it!  I'm not sure if you guys would be interested in hearing about it, but if you do, let me know in the comments and we'll keep you posted.  Let me just say that for the first time in my life, I've found a plan that works for me and it's the longest I've ever kept going with an eating plan, so I know I'm going to reach my goal in 2014.  I've never felt like this before and it feels amazing!

4. I will learn what Google + is all about.  I've said this before but every time someone adds me to their circle, my first thought is "Whattttt is Gooooooooogle+?!"  I may have to do a Fas Course in it, but I'll get it, I hope….

5. I will comment more on other people's blogs and videos.  It's just laziness on my part not to comment, so apologies for that and I'll definitely be more active in that regard in 2014.

6. I will be more organised in all aspects of my life.  About 4 months ago, I found Organised Like Jen on YouTube who makes videos about organising, funny that!  Anyway, although she takes organising to a whole other level, watching her videos and vlogs has inspired me to sort myself out over the past few months and I'll be continuing that on into 2014.  I even bought storage containers yesterday!  Certain parts of my house and life are already more organised and I feel the better of it.

7. I will surround myself with people I like and that make me laugh.  I think this is pretty self explanatory!  Make me laugh and we'll get along just fine!

On to Joanne's new year's resolutions now.

1. Be more organised.  A lot is happening this year!  The wedding is in 5 months, we're going to New York for mam's 60th and Will is 30!  I've a pretty mental year ahead of me so I need to be as organised as possible so I don't get too stressed.  I have a to do list for the wedding and will start one for mam's birthday/saving for New York as well as for Will's birthday.  It's going to be a fantastic year and I want to enjoy every minute of it!

2. Save, save, save!  As I mentioned above, 2014 is going to be a brilliant year but I have a lot of saving to get done.  I'm usually good at saving but I want to kick it into overdrive next year as it's going to be pretty expensive.  At the moment I've a tin can to save all my €2 coins in.  If I don't have many €2 coins in my purse, then it's €1, 50c, or even €5 notes that'll go into it.  On top of that, I'll be bringing my lunch and snacks into work every day to cut down on the aul spends.

3. Lose weight.  Bringing my lunch into work will also mean (hopefully), I won't be eating rubbish.  I have a stunning wedding dress to wear in May so I want to look my absolute best.  I started Slimming World at the end of November to help me get there as I don't think I'd have the willpower to do it myself.

4. No time for neggy neddies.  I'm usually a positive person most of the time but I can let other people's actions get to me and dwell on them.  For 2014, I don't want my energy to be wasted on that.  It's not worth it.

5. Be happy!  This is such an exciting year and I want to enjoy every single day as much as I can because I know the next 12 months will fly by.  I want to waste no time on the negative things and just enjoy all the little things that are happening around me.  It's going to be a fantastic year for me, my family and friends and hopefully you too!

So we want to wish you a Happy New Year!  Thank you for all of your support over 2013 and we hope to keep you entertained during 2014!  We've lots of plans for our little YouTube channel and with the tiny possibility of something huge and scary happening which we'll know more about in January, you'll be seeing lots more of us two eejits over the next 12 months!

Enjoy your night whether you're staying in or going out and let us know if you're interested in hearing about Slimming World!  We want to hear what your resolutions are because we love being inspired by you.

Happy Christmas from Lovely Girlie Bits!

Here at Lovely Girlie Bits, we've finished our Christmas shopping, wrapped all of our presents and are ready to enjoy Christmas.  Joanne is finished work while I'm in today and tomorrow, so say a prayer that the two days are uneventful and that no patient rings at noon on Tuesday looking for an urgent prescription!

Initially I was going to take a complete break from blogging over the Christmas break, but I still have more things I want to blog about, so rather than stopping completely, I'll be posting more sporadically, without any pressure!  I find that as I've more time to relax over the Christmas, I end up watching lots of YouTube videos and reading plenty of blog posts, and I end up finding lots of new ones this way as most people stop blogging completely over the break.

So Joanne and I just wanted to wish you a very merry Christmas!  We hope you have a lovely time wherever you may be and hope you're surrounded by family and friends.  Make sure to eat, drink and be merry because it's Christmas!

Thank you so much for all your support over the last year.  We'll thank you properly next week but just know that those of you who read the blog, comment, watch your videos and support us are star bars.  Actual star bars!

Haaaaaaaaaapppyyyyyyyyyy Christtttttmaasssssssss!

Rimmel Apocalips Big Bang - Tis the season to wear red lips, fa la la la la, la la la laaaaaaa

My festive red lips series wouldn't be complete without Big Bang from Rimmel's Apocalips range now wouldn't it?  I've seen countless bloggers and YouTubers raving about it and knew that it was only a matter of time before I picked it up and gave it a whirl.

I've a few other shades in the range and love them all.  Like the rest, Big Bang is pigmented, creamy and sits beautifully on the lips.  The wand has a little pool that holds just the right amount of product so you don't end up looking like The Joker.  I think it's safe to say that the Apocalips changed the way we all viewed lip lacquers this year and we realised we didn't have to spend much money to get gorgeous lips!

Now feast your eyes on Big Bang…. Isn't it the most gorgeous shade of red?  That's just one coat in the photos below and the finish is flawless.  Almost.  The only con to this shade is that it likes to move around and bleed slightly in the corners of my mouth, but nothing that a little lighter application in that area won't help.  The formula isn't thick or sticky and although it will transfer to glasses if you're having a sneaky beverage or ten, stays put for ages.

Big Bang costs a measly €7.95 and is an absolute steal when you think about the high quality of the product.

Have you tried Big Bang?  If not, what are you waiting for!

We're back with part 2 of our Christmas gift guide series!  We look the exact same as in yesterday's post because we filmed them all (there are two more parts to come and they're both beauty related!) in one night and over the course of a couple of hours.

We covered some electronic bits yesterday and wanted to feature some non beauty related things, all of which were house-y types of presents and are some of our favourite things in life!  Please note, we are relatively normal in this video because the exhaustion hadn't set in yet, woo hoo!

Products featured:

  • La Bougie Gousse de Vanille candle - €19.95
  • La Bougie Lichen & Winter Jasmine diffuser - €29.95

  • Like Mam Used to Bake by Rosanne Hewitt-Cromwell - €19.95

Let the record show that we love all of the things.  Even those Joanne can't pronounce.  So if you're doing Secret Santa at work and aren't sure about makeup or skincare to buy as presents, any of these items would be welcome by your Secret Santa!

Part 3 is up tomorrow and it's the beauty edition, so make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel so you see it first!

Lovely Manly Dangly Bits reviews the L'Oreal Men Expert Hydra Energetic Sport Set!

Today's post comes courtesy of our brother Stephen who has reviewed boy things for us before, entitling his corner of the blog "Lovely Manly Dangly Bits"!  When this Hydra Energetic Sport Kit from L'Oreal arrived a few weeks ago, I handed it over for himself to try as I'm sorry, I try a lot of things for the blog, but I draw the line at manly moisturiser and deodorant!    Over to you Stephen!

Now before we start, I have to make reference to this Dara O'Briain video, where he puts it better than I ever could: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPre1TtvTqk.  The reason I refer to this are the words on the box: Air-Gel Technology and Hydra Energetic.  I just don't think a man-man-man-man-manly-man-man would walk by this in the shops and go 'Oh my God this has AIR-GEL TECHNOLOGY!  I must have it'.  I know I wouldn't.

Anywho, onto the stuff itself.  I've been using other moisturiser for the past year that I've found really good.  A little on the dear side but it definitely works for me.  I gave the L'oreal stuff a go for two weeks to see if it was any use.

I have one small problem with my 'own' manly moisturiser.  I usually apply it in the morning after I have a shower in the gym, so my face is usually ROASTIN' hot when the moisturiser goes on, it doesn't sink in.  The L'oreal stuff worked a little better, it absorbed nice and quick and my face felt a little cold after I put it on - probably due to the 'Instant Icy Feel'.  Bear in mind I used this when we had a cold spell a couple of weeks back, so after I made my way to work, this was all I could think of when I got into the warm office:

Overall, I'm kinda on the fence on whether I'd buy it. It seemed inexpensive to me when I initially looked at it - €15 quid for a 50ml bottle.  The bottle looks bigger but when I did the maths - and I'm no mathematician - its as expensive if not a little more expensive than the one I currently use.  The fact that this set costs €13.00 and you're getting a deodorant as well takes the edge off the financial sting.

Personally, I'm not looking for technology in a moisturiser. I'm also not looking for anything 'quenching' other than an ice cold beer on a really hot day. m If your moisturiser doesn't make my face feel all tight or give me spots, your job is done.

Verdict: 8/10 Dangly Christmas Balls

Pros: Absorbs quickly, fresh feel after applying.
Cons: Silly marketing on the box aimed for 8 year olds, deceivingly expensive.

So he gives the set 8 Dangly Christmas Balls, not bad eh?  Sets like this are always a handy stocking stuffer at this time of the year and are really reasonably priced.  The fact that Stephen was freaking out thinking it was €15 for a bottle of moisturiser made me not want to tell him how much I spend on moisturisers!  Ah to be a lad!  Thanks for the review Stephen!  He'll be back with more Lovely Manly Dangly Bits in the future, so stay tuned!

Christmas gift guide! The electronics!

So Joanne and I decided to film a series of Gift Guide videos this year and us being so busy, trying to coordinate filming times proved difficult, hence the lateness of these videos.  Next year we'll be much more organised!

We had so many products to show you and decided to split the gift guides up into four different videos. Today we're showing you electric things you can buy.  And the last product doesn't require plugging in, but we didn't cop that at the time but it's a gadget nonetheless!  We'll have non beauty gifts tomorrow, followed by beauty products and finally stocking stuffers, so a busy week ahead here on Lovely Girlie Bits!  As we've a week go go and a lot of people leave shopping until the last minute, hopefully the gift guides will give you some ideas and inspiration.  So sit back and get a notepad and pen in case you see anything you like!

Stay tuned for part 2 tomorrow!

Maybelline Color Show Brocades collection - sparkley nails for Christmas!

In the beauty world, Christmas = glitter polish.  They go hand in hand like mulled wine and mince pies.   No wait, that sounds horrible.  More like a grand cup of tea with a mince pie.  And custard.  Birds custard.  Right from the carton.

Anyway, I digress, back to the nail polishes.  Maybelline's Color Show range has four new sparkly members, the Brocades, which makes them sound like a girl band, but I tellya, I like what they're singing.  I blogged in great detail about Knitted Gold a few weeks ago after spotting it in Boots, and the rest of the collection arrived on my desk last week to much happiness and joy, which is what Christmas is all about.  And glittery nails.

As mentioned in my previous post, Knitted Gold is a different take on the traditional rose gold polish, mixing fine gold glitter in with larger pink glittery bits to make the blingiest, girliest polish ever to adorn my nails.

Foil Flash is for those of us who want to frost our nails.  The base is full of fine silver shimmer, dotted with larger silver hexagonal glitter bits.  This would make a nice top coat over a pale polish rather than being worn on it's own.

Rosie Rosette is a festive treat for the nails, being a mix of red and gold.  The gold shimmer is very fine and not as obvious as the red, but if the light catches it just right, it adds some pretty sparkle to the red shimmer and larger red glitter bits.

Woven Skyline reminds me of the New York skyline at night.  It's got black shimmer mixed in with silver and gold glitter, making it nice and dark for a glitter, but with enough sparkle to keep it interesting.

Each of the four Brocades can be worn alone if layered, or as a topcoat over a base shade.  They're €5.99, on counters now and you've no excuse!  Go bling out your nails this Christmas!

Which is your favourite shade?

Diego Della Palma Il Rosetto The Lipstick Shade 31 - Tis the season to wear red lips, fa la la la la, la la la laaaaa

The Pixiwoo sisters first brought Italian brand Diego Dalla Palma into my life as they went through a phase of using the brow gel.  When I heard it had come to the beauty hall in Marks and Spencer though, I was only delighted that it would be accessible as I'm always in the beauty hall when I'm moseying in town on the weekend.  Accessible is good, but not so for the aul bank balance.

I was given shade 31 to play with a few months ago and it was the lipstick that inspired the whole red lip series that I've got going on and I mean, come on, look at it….

Sleek white packaging with the name on the side makes it stand out from every other lipstick in my collection, and that's saying a lot.  This blue based red lippie was almost too pretty to mess up, but all in the name of the blog eh?  It contains teeny tiny beads of marine collagen which penetrate the contours of the lips, smoothing them out and I definitely saw an improvement in the texture of my lips using it.

The creamy formula glides on easily, leaving a satin finish and feels lovely and comfy on the lips.  Dare I say it that I sometimes forget I'm wearing it!  It fades away gently leaving a light stain and doesn't bleed or smush itself around in the corners of your mouth.

€20 is the damage and I'll definitely be checking out more shades because this one is an absolute dream to wear.

Bargain alert! Ebay brushes - dupes for Sigma?

I blame Fee from Makeup Savvy for making me buy this set of brushes from Ebay after reading this post!  After reading the post and seeing the prices, I hotfooted it over to the seller on Ebay and had a browse of everything, because they've a lot to go through.  I ended up buying a 10 piece set with face and eye brushes in it as lord knows I need more brushes *ahem*.  So €15.00 each for a set of 10 brushes?  Don't mind if I do.  This is the set I bought and there are a few variations of it if you're a fan of pink handles or gold ferrules.

There are five face brushes in the set, all duo fibre and all differently shaped.  Each one is dense, sturdy and soft at the same time.  They're all made with synthetic hair as are the eye brushes and can be used to apply all the things on your face.  I'm rather happy with using the dome shaped brush to apply my under eye concealer and the angled kabuki has made it's home as my contour brush.

Now when I saw the set on ebay, my first thought was how they looked like Sigma brushes.  Check out the Sigma Kabuki Kit here.  I only have one Sigma brush in my stash, the F80, so I can only compare that one to the corresponding one in the set.  Em, it looks and feels pretty similar to moi!  The F80 has a slightly shorter handle, and the hair isn't as shiny, but using them both gives identical results.  My F80 still has a bit of make up in it, so isn't as fluffy as the new one, but they both work the same way.

I have a weird affinity to duo fibre brushes and so when I saw these eye brushes, all was well in the world again.  And again, check out the Sigmax Precision Kit here to see how similar these guys are!  There are a couple of angled brushes, one flatter and more dense than the other, one flat topped brush and two round topped blending brushes, one more dense than the other.  Each of them pick up shadows beautifully and blend them easily.  I love using the flat topped brush, second from the bottom to press cream products onto my eyelid.

As I mentioned above, I bought my brushes from this seller on Ebay and they've so many different sets on there, so make sure you have a look around and see what else tickles your fancy.  I'm not going to lie, I totally have my eye on this set next, so maybe in the new year I'll treat myself!

Shipping is free but takes up to 20 days, so if you're in no rush but want a set of bargainous brushes, then definitely check them out.

Bourjois 1 Second Nail Polish - Violine Hypnotique photos, review

Just when I thought I couldn't love a new nail polish before the end of the year, this stunner from Bourjois come into my life.  It actually came into my life a few weeks ago when I met with the brand, but I've finally gotten around to playing with it and lads, it's true love.  Violine Hypnotique is the polish in question and just feast your eyes on it.  Part of the 1 Second collection, the wide brush makes for easy peasy lemon squeezy application and even Joanne commented on that when using it!

This deep burgundy polish is absolutely perfect for this time of year with it's slight purple undertones and while it's not on stands until January, I'd keep an eye on Bourjois stands because they usually appear earlier than planned.

Violine Hypnotique in all it's maroon-y loveliness is mulled wine in nail polish form.  And you don't have to worry about the hangover.  In regular light it's superbly glossy, sophisticated and completely office friendly.  I love that it's a really dark, vampy shade but that you can still see the actual colour of it when you admire your nails.  Nowt drives me madder than when polish just looks black on the nails.

When sunlight or any kind of direct light hits it though, the shimmer comes alive and gives it more depth and dimension.

It's rare that I get so many compliments on my nails in real life and as I type this, both Joanne and I have our nails painted with Voiline Hypnotique.  That never happens!  And something else that never happens is that I removed it the other night and immediately reapplied it.  This means true love.

€7.99 is the damage and come January (hopefully earlier), you have to check it out.

If you have nails, you need this.

New video! Christmas nail art tutorial

Last year I wrote this post showing you how to do a bit of easy peasy nail art.  I wanted my nails to look like Christmas presents, but have no talent in the nail art department at all.  I can do dots and tape and that's it.

So since I'm all into the videos at the moment, I decided to film it for your viewing pleasure with a tutorial, voice over and a bit of singing.  Oh yes, I'm multi talented me.  This is something anyone can do.  The only faffing about is with the nail tape, but once you get the hang of it, it's easy.

So tell moi, do you like to get artistic with your nails over Christmas?  I've got some more video ideas, so I'd best get busy and teach you all a bit more about easy peasy nail art!

Michael Kors Glam Jasmine review

Since smelling Glam Jasmine from the new Michael Kors beauty collection, I've been singing "I knew I loved you before I met you" because I did.  I big fat did.  I'm the biggest fan of anything jasmine and also a long term fan of Michael Kors scents, so I knew this would be a match made in heaven.  I knew it was going to be the one, I mean The One.

I sprayed Glam Jasmine on myself last weekend and had made a mental note to ask for it for Christmas, but when I met with the team last week, they gave me one to play with and my day was made!  Glam Jasmine is one of three new fragrances from Michael Kors, each designed to represent three different facets of the Michael Kors woman; Sporty, Sexy and Glam.

Glam Jasmine, where do I begin.  Everyone who has sprayed this (under my careful supervision of course, I've to ration this baby), has stopped for a moment to inhale it.  There may have been groans, sighs and holding of the breath while the feminine scent was savoured.  On me, Glam Jasmine starts off being really light and bright with top notes of white florals with a hint of citrus.  As it dries down, the warm woody notes appear with the star of the show, jasmine, and mellows everything out.  It's a clean, creamy scent that works during the day as well as at night, which suits me as I've been carrying around with me everywhere!

This is a stunning scent that I've been wearing non stop since getting it and I've already got my eyes on the other two scents from the collection.  The packaging is sleek and glam might I say and I do spend a lot of time removing fingerprints from the lid because I want it to look untouched at all times!  Now, a little goes a long way with this as Ashling from work and I discovered last week when we nearly caused the death of my boss due to us drowning ourselves in work.  I don't like to cause death, so we are going to go a bit lighter with Glam Jasmine from now on in the office!

The scent comes in three sizes and is €53/30ml, €76/50ml and €104/100ml.  There's also a gift set that contains a 50ml scent and a body lotion too for €76.  So if you're thinking about a new scent this Christmas, then get yourself to the Arnotts website or head in to the shop give this a whiff.

In.  The.  Love.

Total Christmas present idea there folks!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

So yesterday I put up the Christmas tree and decorations and I feel so festive and cosy!  I set up my Christmas tunes and blasted them while I was pottering around and I love how it all turned out.  So I thought a little montage might help you get into the festive spirit and get cracking on the decorations, because 'tis the season and all!

We filmed a Christmas decoration haul last week, so if you're interested, here it is and the photos below show some of the bits in action!

This is my favourite decoration ever!  The Statue of Liberty!

My tablecloth that I got in Spain for €10! Fits perfectly!

So have you put up your decorations yet?
