Slimming World #5

So the month is over and it's time for a review of our Slimming World journey.  If you're following the plan yourself, then go on and leave an aul comment to let us know how you're getting on and we can keep each other motivated.

I lost another half a stone which is great and I got my club 10 award this month too!  That means I've lost 10% of my body weight and I definitely feel the better of it.  I've lost a total of 25 lbs and two stone is my next goal.  I find having little goals like that keeps me going.  Joanne lost 4.5 lbs this month and got her half a stone award too and now has her sights set on the stone mark, so hopefully this month she'll get it and will be on her way to target.

Now it's not all plain sailing with the plan and I do try to keep things positive to keep the motivation and inspiration going, but it's the monthly review and we need to talk details.

- I found out that bloody sweetcorn and frozen peas are only Free, not SuperFree.  Raging but I'm happy I know now.

- We found out that our beloved chicken chow mein was originally 7 syns as per the back of the Slimming World hand book and according to the app is now 16.5 bloody syns!   This is a pain in the hoop so we'll have to cut down on that, not that we eat it very often, but chicken in oyster sauce has fewer syns by a mile, so might have to be our treat.  Although we do like an aul chow mein...

- Something that Joanne and I have struggled with since starting Slimming World is emmmm, the little issue of being clogged up.  Ahem... I know this isn't pleasant but such is life and as it's something we're both having issues with, maybe others out there might be too, or might have some remedies to help us!

We both drink lots of water every day.  I drink about 2 litres a day and while I pee like a racehorse, that's about the extent of the movement.  I eat fruit and vegetables until they're coming out of my ears, but they don't come out of my bum.  I've tried linseed and that just made me bloated and yesterday I finally bought a bottle of prune juice like a proper bridie.  As I type this, my stomach is making serious gurgling noises like the start of that scene from Bridesmaids!  So we'll see what happens.  It's gotten to the point that Joanne and I check in with each other a few times a day - "Did you go yet?"  And if we have, much gloating ensues.  Part of it might be psychological, for me anyway because in all the weeks I've been going to Slimming World, I can't go to the toilet on weigh in day.  Not once.  On the weeks I didn't go, it was no hassle!  Because I suffer with IBS from time to time, it's an issue I'm always dealing with and when I cut fat out of my diet, I get clogged up, simple as.  So it might be that I need to use some of my syns on olive oil to keep my tubes lubricated or something.  But please, if you've any ideas or suggestions, please leave them in the comments and our bowels will thank you for it because at the moment, I'm only going about 3-4 times a week and that ain't good!

Apart from that, we've been losing weight slowly but surely.  I can't wear certain things because they're too big and things that were bet on to me are now baggy.  Seeing results like this makes me want to keep going and they're more important to me than the numbers.  However my work trousers proved to be near fatal as they're huge on me now and I tripped over them on the way to work this week and fell!  I scraped my hands and knee and how they looked was not an accurate representation of how sore they were!  Ah no it wasn't too bad, but now I have a belt on the trousers and have them Simon Cowell high until I get new ones.  Today hopefully!

Yesterday we got the bridesmaids dresses and it was so nice being able to go into shops and have things fit better than they would 25 lbs ago.  I wasn't dreading it like I would have before and I feel and look lovely in the dress if I do say so myself!  We got it in a slightly smaller size because I want to be down at least another 2 stone by then and if I have to get it taken in, so be it!  It'll keep me going and be something to focus on.

Speaking of focus, in February I want to start doing more exercise.  I've a couple of dvds that I'll be trying out and bringing Bailey for longer walks now that it's a bit brighter in the evenings.  I've got the food part of the plan pretty much under control, so moving more is my plan for this month.

Thanks for reading this rather long post!  If you'd like me to continue weekly Slimming World posts, then let me know and if not, I'll do monthly ones which was my original plan.

Good luck ladies!

  3. Well done Karen! I've just started this sasta fitness programmer here in the west - it's walking on a treadmill in a vacuum and very space age!! It's also a relief to know I'm not the only crazy person trying to get certain things accomplished on weight day :) I really enjoy these posts!

  4. Wow well done Karen and Joanne you are doing brilliantly.
I also suffer with IBS it is a pain. The best thing I've found and it was recommended by dietician is fybogel. It adds the extra fibre you need to your diet to naturally improve bowel movement. I take it after my breakfast 5 days a week. Keeps things moving. ;-)

    1. I think I tried that in the past and it had me crippled with the pain, I even tried some of dad's Movicol they gave him when he was sick and it pickled my insides, might give fybogel another go though and see if anything happens ;)

  5. What a great job! Congrats :) But seriously, I would definitely use some syns on the olive oil. Healthy fats is crucial for your overall health, even your brain and your cells. Even more so, many of the vitamins in the food you eat can not be absobed without any fat. So I would rather use my syns on some healthy olive oil. Just be carefull not to overheat the oil (keep it below the smoking point), so you keep the good benefits of the oil. Once the oil is "burned" it's like a toxin for the body. So no frying! But maybe you can drizzle some on your food once it's already cooked? I do that all the time, and you don't really taste it if you don't like the taste of it :) And did you ground up your linseeds? I was always clogged up before, but then I started using linseeds in my morning smoothie (just a teaspoon, if I used more than that I would be stuck to the toilet that day.....) and I found great relief in that :) If you are seriously clogged up, I would maybe use 2 teaspoons the first couple of days until you find relief, and then only use 1 teaspoond for "maintenance". Keep up the good work, and seriously consider some healthy fats in your diet :)

    1. Thanks so much for the helpful comment, I'll deffo start taking some more olive oil and seeing if it helps! I've tried ground up linseeds and nothing at all. Whole linseeds just make me bloated and cause a bit of pain, I'm a nightmare in the bowel department!! Thanks so much again :)

  6. Oh weekly posts would be great! I'm enjoying them. Scan Bran from Slimming World is great. Very high in fibre. You can have 5 as a healthy extra or 1 syn each.

  10. Hey K! I have to say Well Done Bridie!
We had the same problem with Liamo, and we found that Syrup of Fig (Califig) helped him. Also we would make him sit on the toilet (without straining, just sitting) at the same time everyday for 30minutes with a book. this helped to establish a routine. We did ours just after lunch time, but you need to set out a time that you will be home everyday. Don't rush it! Also a colonic is great to get rid of any impacted "food" Hayley from LBQ did one and she loved it!

  11. Well done Karen! In your last YouTube video I could see a huge difference. Healthy fats are so important as you need fat to burn fat oddly enough. Try taking a fish oil supplement or flaxseed oil. Also good luck with the exercise, it'll keep you toned as the weight drops off to prevent sagging skin. X

  12. please continue with the weekly posts Karen. I too made the mistake with the peas and was eating them in copious amounts until I found out they are not super free. Lots of people swear by the Scan Bran for fibre and I am going to get some tomorrow. Apparently you can use them for making cakes etc but I am very dubious about that. It would be interesting to see if anyone has cooked with them.

Well done, Karen! You're doing brilliantly and I love your posts. I've done SW in the past and had the same - ahem - issue as you, but porridge sorted it. 35g of jumbo rolled oats soaked overnight in the fridge in 1/4 cup of ss milk and 1/4 cup of water. Nuke in microwave for 3 mins in the morning (stir after 2 mins), add a tsp honey if you're feeling decadent and hey presto: breakfast of champions!

  14. I suffer badly with IBS so much so I've got terrible anxiety from it. I'm doing slimming world now as well and so far so good. I've had no blockage problems but I don't want to speak too soon haha! Keep drinking all the water and the other thing I would recommend is exercise which you've mentioned you're going to start. That will help a lot! Try some squats too! Sounds silly but works sometimes haha! :P

I'd say stay away from fiber. I have as little fiber as I can because it KILLS my stomach. But that's me and my IBS. You might be different. Try it but if it pains you stop! If anything is giving you pain I wouldn't recommend it!
