Back in my December favourites, and possibly another video before that, I professed my love for the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. It changed my opinion completely on Estee Lauder's Double Wear foundation which just didn't work on me at all using a brush or my fingers and because of the Miracle Complexion Sponge, it turned Double Wear into one of my holy grail foundations. I used it most days with all of my foundations because it helped give the most natural, skin like finish and was a pleasure to use.
I waffled on and on about this sponge to anyone who would listen to me and so a few months ago, I decided to buy a second one because I figured, hey, I'm using this one all the time, I need a spare one to keep me going while this first one is drying. I got home and opened the packing and thought "Hmm, this one doesn't feel like the other one"... It seemed a lot rougher, more porous and I figured it was probably because it was dry and needed to wet it to see if it smoothed out.
No. After running it under water and squeezing it out in a towel, it still felt really wet, and wetting it didn't seem to change the size texture of it either. It didn't get smoother or feel like it absorbed much water despite having so many massive pores to sop up moisture. My first Real Techniques sponge swells like a big leech with the amount of water it takes in, but once I squeeze it in a dry towel, the moisture on the outside is gone and I'm left with a perfectly damp sponge. Why wasn't this new kid playing ball?
But I still wasn't ready to give up on this newbie, especially not having tried it yet. So I gave it a go with my Double Wear and realised my first impressions were right. It wasn't the same as my first sponge. Despite having not absorbed much water inside the sponge itself, it seemed to absorb a lot of my foundation. It left my face looking and feeling wet and that's not what I'm after when I'm heading to work in the morning.
So just let the record show, if you ever hear me talking about the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge, I'm talking about this one. It's smooth as a baby's bum. Excoosy the makeup on it, it's a hoor to clean.
Did they make a wonky batch? I know when Lisa watched my video recently she said she'd the same problem with her new one, so tell me if you've had the same issue. If you've gotten a more porous sponge, is there a way of making it work for you?
All I'm happy about is that I got a smooth sponge first because if I'd picked this thing up first I wouldn't have raved about it at all.
So when you're in your local chemist looking for one of these, try to get the smoothest one. It'll be worth it!
Update: Real Techniques saw me and Lisa chatting on Twitter and tweeted mes last night to their customer support here if we notice any different in quality, so I'll be filling that out today and if you too have bought a porous sponge, let's unite and bring the smooth ones back!
