What does retinol actually do?

  • Increases cell turnover by exfoliating the skin, bringing new skin cells to the surface, boosting collagen, and helping the skin to look firmer.
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and improves the texture of your skin.
  • Treats acne by helping to unclog pores.
  • Reduces pigmentation.
  • Gives brighter, more radiant skin.

Skinceuticals Retinol 0.3% – €88.00

This contains encapsulated retinol, so it has a steady, even release rather than flooding your skin with retinol all at once. So, it works at targeting the visible appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, pore size, and blemishes by speeding up cell turnover.

Use a pea-sized amount at night to the skin and avoid the lip and eye area.

The Inkey List Retinol Eye Cream – €15.99

This is specifically for the eyes. If you want to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, this is worth picking up. It has a 3% Vitalease Stabilised Retinol Compound, which is a slow-release formula to help avoid irritation under the eyes. The amount of retinol in it works out at about 0.09%, so nice and low, but still take your time building up the tolerance.

You can use it on lines around the mouth, too, but don’t take it onto the lips.

Vichy Liftactiv Pure Retinol Serum – €44.50

This combines 0.2% Pure retinol with 1% probiotic, known for its skin-repairing properties, so you’re getting the efficacy of the retinol and the tolerance with the probiotic. This serum has a gorgeous texture and helps to visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles, increasing the skin’s radiance, making it look brighter, more youthful and even-toned.

Tips when using retinol

  • Start slowly and take time to build up your tolerance. Many people are nervous when starting retinol as they’re afraid their skin will react. Still, with patience and beginning with a low concentration, you can build up the frequency and concentration as your skin acclimatises to it.
  • Regarding frequency, start by applying it 1-2 a week, then increase it bit by bit. Follow the instructions on the product packaging, but don’t feel pressured to increase the frequency if your skin isn’t ready. It’s better to have a period of consistent tolerance where your skin is stable before increasing the concentration or frequency.
  • Use a pea-sized amount of retinol and apply it on cleansed skin. If your skin is sensitive, you can sandwich it between two layers of moisturiser. So, on cleansed skin, apply a layer of moisturiser, then a layer of retinol and lock it in with another layer of moisturiser.
  • Don’t use it the same nights you’re using any Alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, polyhydroxy acids or vitamin C.
  • SPF is a non-negotiable when using retinol, as retinol makes your skin extra sensitive to the sun. And think about it – you’re using retinol to bring new skin cells to the surface. Do you really want to damage them when they’re brand new and fresh?! SPF every day, people!
